The TUC, unions, local trades councils and community campaigners will be taking the call for Pensions Justice to towns and cities across the country with rallies and public meetings in many towns, and activists will be out on the High Street, distributing leaflets and talking to members of the public.

The events, many of which are listed at the False Economy website’s special Pensions Justice map, are aimed at building public support for Pensions Justice day on November 30 when millions of trade union members will be taking industrial action in defence of decent pensions.
In London on Wednesday 30 November a SERTUC demonstration leaves Lincoln’s Inn Fields, WC2A at 12 noon with a student feeder march from Malet Street WC1E leaving University of London Union at 11:00 hours.

The union ballot results show support for strike action.

  • AEP (Association of Educational Psychologists) 64%;
  • ASPECT 75.1%;
  • ATL (Association of Teachers and Lecturers) 30 June ballot mandate still valid;

  • CSP Scotland 89.1%;
  • FDA 81%; GMB 83.7%;

The formal dispute is over public sector pensions.  The government proposals – for people to PAY MORE, WORK LONGER, FOR A SMALLER PENSION (if they don’t die in harness) – are well-explained here http://pensionsjustice.org.uk/the_attack_on_pensions. They represent an unprecedented raid on deferred pay, not because pensions schemes are underfunded, but to pay off the deficit caused by the bankers.

But it is clear that November 30th also represents a fundamental challenge to the cuts and privatisation programme of the ConDem Government.  Len McCluskey, UNITE general secretary, has said: “Every conceivable form of protest and action should be considered, from civil disobedience through to co-ordinated industrial strikes in the face of the type of onslaught we are looking at.”

The Coalition of Resistance (CoR) has called for the maximum possible co-ordinated strike action. In addition, we want all anti-cuts committees and activists, whether in a union or not, to pull out all the stops to turn November 30th into a Festival of Resistance, with pensioners, students and unemployed people joining together in a massive day of defence for jobs, the NHS, the Welfare State, and free education.
