Haringey Trades Union Council has said a 1000 strong march of parents, students trade unionists and community activists has marched from Downhills School in Tottenham to Haringey Civic Centre in Wood Green today

The march, which was called by the Haringey Campaign Against Academies and others was designed to make sure that the future of Downhills school in Tottenham remains in local democratic control and not subject to an attempt by Education Secretary Michael Gove to turn it into an Academy

The lively march led off by parents and pupils from a number of Haringey schools under potential threat of Academy status including Downhills and Noel Park find a welcoming response from passers-by on its route and numbers joined in.

Banners on the march included numbers from London associations of the National Union of Teachers and Haringey UNISON as well as Haringey Trades Council’s own banner on one of its last outings before replacement in the Spring.

Haringey TUC Secretary Keith Flett said this was a very large march showing a community united in its determination to stop Michael Gove interfering in Haringey.

Those on the march were genuine about working hard to improve education not ideological point scoring as the Education Secretary is.
