L/Cpl Tasker and Theo. Lives cut short.
One of the alternatives to spending cuts is to bring our troops home from Afghanistan. It would save £2.6bn a year and stop precious lives being wasted. Every life that is lost over there is a tragedy and every time I see coffins lining Wottoon Bassett high street I am saddened enough to cry. A news item started doing the rounds yesterday which is a story of human and animal bonding in a time of war has touched so many already and brought them to tears. A soldier lost his life to a sniper in Afghanistan and his army dog which he worked so closely with and which was saving lives by sniffing out bombs died shortly afterwards. They say of a broken heart. Lance Corporal Tasker was aged just 26 and Theo 22 months.
Man and dog will be repatriated to Wootton Bassett next Thursday. I have often felt the urge to witness these young lives which have been cut short so brutally being brought home and to pay respects. This is the time and this is why I’ll be there next Thursday.
