I retired as a GP through ill health earlier this year. Since the start of my career in 1987, there have many changes to the NHS. Most GPs choose this career path to be clinicians not administrators. This view is reflected across most practices. Now this Coalition Government wants to hand all the budget to GPs. What a waste of clinicians. As with fundholding and all the reforms, this will definitely lead to back door privatisation. There will also be an uproar nationally over lack of GP appointments (over and above the problems we have now). Most GPs do like being consulted on service provision but not to run the NHS.

I am so afraid that this “listening exercise” is just a whitewash, that the “reforms” aka “butchering” will go ahead anyway, depite your words, Dr Velamail, and those of the majority of your colleagues. This is change for the sake of ideology, not for the sake of the people, please tell us how to support you and I have no doubt that the vast majority of the population will do so.

We love our NHS, we value the our clinicians at every level and we know that at the moment, it’s not very broke, not in need of “fixing” and we know that in “fixing” they will rob and undermine! In fact, though Lansley did his best to hide the report, it’s just got its best user satisfaction return in years! (Yes, we use you, we are not “customers”, we have no choice, and very glad I am of that because you give the very best, so let’s rid ourselves of this market-speak!)

Whatever I can do to help, and influence others to do so too, I am very happy to do.
