Some people don’t agree with EMA. They think that it’s not using taxpayers’ funds wisely. They think that it’s not necessary. But Education Maintenance Allowance was introduced in response to insufficient youngsters from less well-off backgrounds staying on in college, and in this way EMA has achieved its goal. The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) states EMA
’significantly increased participation rates in post-16 education among young adults who were eligible to receive it’ and
‘the study concluded that the costs of providing EMA were likely to be exceeded in the long run by the higher wages that its recipients would go on to enjoy in future’.
The study also concluded there were additional benefits of EMA such as increased attendance rates, more study time through not having to take on a part-time job and wealth re-distribution which is an important social objective.
Yet some who responded to a Shropshire Star on-line blog this week disagreed with EMA. And some were even rude to the young blogger who comes from a one-parent family and for whom EMA is vital.
